How it works. Positive displacement rotary blowers have two figure eight impellers rotating in opposite directions. As the impeller lobes pass the blower inlet, they trap a quantity of air equal to exactly 25% of the displacement of the blower. This entrapment occurs four times per revolution, moving the entrapped air around the case to the blower outlet. Timing gears position the impellers in relation to each other.
Features include: Helical gears Oil free exhaust Stronger bearings ISO 9001 certified
18 Month warrantee Positive end clearances Polished sealing surfaces Rotors with integrally cast shafts Every pump system built to order
Helical Timing Gears Tuthill blowers are timed with hardened, precision helical gears, keyed to the rotor shafts, this is better than taper fit spur gears that most other manufacturers use, which have greater backlash, and can slip and lose timing. Helical gears are also quieter, reducing mechanical noise. Rotors Tuthill blowers include precision machined ductile iron rotors with large, integrally cast shafts, most other pumps use press fit and/or pinned shafts which can loosen over time and cause rotor clash. Also both rotors are dynamically balanced for vibration-free rotation. Positive end clearances, End clearances are positively established at the blower gear end, eliminating the risk of shifting end clearances when installing or removing drive components. This also eliminates the need for those special fork and saddle tools required by other brands to reset end clearances. Polished Sealing Surfaces All shaft surfaces in contact with sealing members are polished to reduce seal wear and risk of leakage. Stronger Bearings All Tuthill blowers include double row ball bearings at the gear end, stronger than single row ball bearings which are often used. Drive shaft bearing is cylindrical roller type for additional strength against side loading from V-belt drives. As a result of this superior design, Tuthill blowers bearings last as much as 50% longer than Sutorbilt models. Individually Tested Every Tuthill blower is factory tested to assure you of the highest quality. Tuthill goes the distance to insure that your blower meets ISO 9001 registered quality standards. Versatile Mounting Options Unlike other pumps Tuthill blowers can be changed from vertical to horizontal inlet and outlet simply by repositioning the mounting feet on the pump, this makes replacing any pump with a Tuthill simple and easy and requires no special tools. Lubrication Timing gears and gear end bearings are lubricated utilizing a "splash bath" oil reservoir.

VSD = Variable Speed Drive
How VSD's work: Milking vacuum pumps are sized to deliver the required maximum vacuum level to operate the milking and washing systems. Occasionally when a milking unit falls off a cow's udder or when there is a temporary system leak, high levels of vacuum are needed for short intervals. Normal milking operation uses less than half the maximum vacuum available. Before variable speed technology was used for vacuum pumps, dairy operators had to run their pumps at a constant high speed to perform adequately during the occasional short intervals of high vacuum need. The VSD determines exactly how much vacuum the system requires by using a sensor located in the balance tank and regulates the speed of the pump accordingly. The result is a pump that runs at a much lower speed most of the time and requires substantially less electricity to do the job. Typical energy savings are from 50% to 80%. Our customers who switched to VSD tell us on average they save about $1.00 per cow per month. A 400 cow dairy will see approximately $400 per month savings on energy bills. Also many power utilities have programs in place that will pay for VSD's simply to promote the use of them reducing the load on their system.
Immediate Benefits of VSD's
Stable vacuum: A constant vacuum level at the milking units is necessary to prevent bacteria from accessing the cows' teats. A VSD reacts quickly keeping vacuum stable. (VSD's react quicker than vacuum regulators) Equipment life: A motor run at full speed will have a shorter life span than a motor that regularly runs at a lower speed. Since the VSD operates the vacuum pump at reduced RPMs, bearings and other internal components last longer and require less frequent maintenance. Pumps will also require less frequent replacement or repair. Noise reduction: Milking vacuum pumps running at full speed can make a lot of noise. One of the benefits of the VSD most often reported by farmers is a much quieter milking area. Great financial investment: The energy and money savings from installing a VSD varies from farm to farm based on the size and type of vacuum pump, the type of milking system, and the daily time required for milking. On some dairy farms the substantial energy savings have made the payback period on the installed cost of the VSD as short as ten months. Typical energy savings are from 50% to 80%. Our customers who switched to VSD tell us on average they save $1.00 per cow per month. So a 400 cow dairy will see approximately $400 per month savings on energy bills. Easy to install: Parts Dept. programs all VSD's at no extra charge. Weather installed on a pump or being sent out as a single item, all VSD's are programmed for you. Once installed simply adjust the vacuum level on the digital display using the up and down arrows.
Installation of a typical VSD:
1. Mount VSD on the wall close to the vacuum pump. 2. Drill and tap a 1/4" hole in the center of your balance tank and screwing in a sensor (drill and tap are provided). 3. Run the sensor wire to VSD and connect to the labeled terminals. 4. Instruct your licensed electrician to connect the incoming power to the appropriate labelled terminals. 5. We recommend setting your existing vacuum controller 1"Hg above your required vacuum level (this will cause the existing vacuum controller to become inactive but still be of use should you disable the VSD for any reason)
